Killing time

Some people might look at me funny when I say I have no idea what movies are out these days. And some know that I absolutely enjoy watching movies, but these days I just don't feel the freedom to plop down to regularly watch a flick, or read a design magazine, or a cooking magazine, or "pampering" myself. Yes, some of that is because John and I are now responsible for two very active, fun and lovely children, but it is also a conviction on my heart from the Holy Spirit that whenever I do have some time to spare I want to live for the glory of God. And lately, my time is spent sharpening my understanding of His great mercies and truths, which in turn reaps awesome fruit: a heart that loves Jesus more, that loves my husband more, loves my children more and loves my neighbors more! Do I miss movies, magazines and pampering? Not at all, especially knowing that I am trading those things for being with Jesus. Does this mean I will never watch a movie, read a magazine, or grab a cup of coffee? Not at all, Jesus gives us so many freedoms that allow us to enjoy things in the right context and at the right times. And that looks so different for everyone!

This all is in response to a little blurb that I "borrowed" from my friend's blog (thanks Jen).

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do--do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31

Amusements are proper, both as to kind and degree--just so far as they make us better followers of Jesus. Whenever they become hindrances to us in our living for Jesus or in our holy walk--they are harmful, however innocent they may be in themselves.
How do your amusements influence your spiritual life? They may be very pleasing to you. They may afford great gratification. But what is their effect on you, as a follower of Jesus? Are they hindering your love for Christ, and your growth in grace? We ought to be honest enough with ourselves, to answer these questions truthfully, and then act accordingly.
